Nissen fundoplication for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease in patients with Chagas disease without achalasia.

چکیده
Chagas disease (CD) is very prevalent in South America, with wellknown manifestations in the digestive system. CD esophagopathy leads to a clinical and manometric picture similar to idiopathic (primary) achalasia. Although the treatment for CD esophagopathy is well established, South American surgeons and gastroenterologists are sometimes faced with CD patients without esophageal involvement but with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) complaints. Surgical therapy in these patients may be debatable due to the fear of deterioration of esophageal peristalsis over time and consequent dysphagia.

Prevalence of gallstones in 1,229 patients submitted to surgical laparoscopic treatment of GERD and esophageal achalasia: associated cholecystectomy was a safe procedure
BACKGROUND Association between esophageal achalasia/ gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and cholelithiasis is not clear. Epidemiological data are controversial due to different methodologies applied, the regional differences and the number of patients involved. Results of concomitant cholecistectomy associated to surgical treatment of both diseases regarding safety is poorly understood. A...
متن کاملGERD: A Debated Background of Achalasia
Achalasia is a primary esophageal motility disorder of unknown etiology, characterized by aperistalsis of the esophageal body and impaired lower esophageal sphincter (LES) relaxation. Available data suggest that the disease is multifactorial, but the exact initiating factors that may play a role in the development of the disease remain unclear. Case presentation: We report the case of a 65 year...
متن کاملNissen vs. toupet fundoplication in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a serious phenomenon in pediatric health care. Without proper treatment, complications related to GERD can impede normal development and can lead to multiple hospitalizations and medical conditions. Previously, surgical intervention was limited to one technique, nissen fundoplication; however, the use of various forms of fundoplication surgery, primaril...
متن کاملEarly Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication for Recurrent Reflux Esophagitis: A Cost-Effective Alternative to Omeprazole
BACKGROUND Eighty percent of patients treated medically for gastroesophageal reflux disease relapse after treatment. Many of these patients require indefinite treatment with omeprazole to prevent recurrence. Nissen fundoplication has been shown to be effective, safe and cost effective in the management of gastroesophageal reflux disease. We suggest a treatment algorithm, which encourages early ...
متن کاملToupét fundoplication for gastroesophageal reflux in childhood.
HYPOTHESIS Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is a common condition in childhood that frequently requires operative treatment. The 360 degrees Nissen fundoplication (NF) has been the standard operation for GER, but is associated with substantial rates of recurrence, "gas bloat," gagging, and dysphagia. I believe that the Toupet fundoplication (TF), a 270 degrees posterior wrap originally described i...
